Football Predictions Saturday

Celtic v Rangers

This one is huge in terms of the Scottish Premiership title, as Celtic and Rangers meet in a what is likely to be a feisty affair in Glasgow.

Celtic looked to have missed their chance of claiming their 54th Scottish title but after putting an unbeaten run together in their last six league games, including a 3-3 draw away to Rangers in April, the Bhoys find themselves top of the league by three points with just three games left to play. Brendan Rodgers side already have to advantage on goal difference but as long as they don’t get beat here, you’d expect them to go on and take the league title again.

Following their draw with Celtic back in April, the two games that came after that looked to have cost Rangers the title, it most certainly gave Celtic the advantage after a 3-2 loss away to Ross County and then a 0-0 draw at Dundee just three games later. Since then, the Gers have put together three consecutive wins, two of which are come in the league, a win here is a must for Rangers if they want to keep their title hopes alive, three points behind their bitter rivals with a smaller goal difference.

This will be a really good watch, Celtic will fancy their chances at Celtic Park given they’ve won the last three head to heads here whilst Rangers haven’t taken all three points on the road in this fixture since 2020, a game played behind closed doors.

Fulham v Manchester City

Manchester City will make the trip to West London on Saturday in the Premier League’s early kick off, as they take on Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Just one win in their last five Premier League games, Fulham look like they’re already on the beach, the best Marco Silva’s side can hope for now is a top half finish but they are four points behind Bournemouth in tenth with just two games left to play, it’s a big ask. It’s rare you’ll see a game end in a draw at Craven Cottage, they’ve drawn just twice in their eighteen league games there this season, I’m sure they would be happy with a draw here.

Manchester City are closing in on their fourth consecutive Premier League title which would be a new league record, just one point behind Arsenal heading into this game albeit with a game in hand. These last three games for Manchester City come with so much pressure and you feel other sides wouldn’t be able to handle it too well, this side definitely can and a victory here would put Pep Guardiola’s side at the summit of the Premier League, with their title contenders playing the other half of Manchester on Sunday afternoon.

This should be fairly straight forward for Manchester City, they’ve beaten Fulham in their last fifteen head-to-head matches, with the reverse fixture finishing 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium in September. Meanwhile, eight of the last ten between these two in West London have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Freiburg v Heidenheim

The Europa-Park Stadion will host this Bundesliga fixture on Saturday afternoon between Freiburg and Heidenheim.

This is a big game for both these sides, Freiburg need a win to keep their dreams alive of playing European football again next season, this time it’s looking likely to be the Europa Conference League. With just two games left to play in the league, they currently occupy that last qualifying spot (7th) with 41 points, just one point ahead of Hoffenheim.

Heidenheim have had a brilliant season so far and they could make it really special by finishing in the top seven and securing European football, they are just three points behind their opponents here with a better goal difference, meaning a result here could move them into the top seven if other results go their way. It’s a very slim chance given five other teams are still able to challenge Freiburg, but you just never know in football.

These two sides have met just once in the Bundesliga and that was earlier in the season, Heidenheim took all three points in that game with a 3-2 victory on home soil. However, they’ve won just three of their sixteen games away from home in the Bundesliga, they may have their work cut out here.

Newcastle United v Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion will take the long trip up north for Saturday afternoon’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are still hoping to end this season with some sort of European football, realistically it looks to be the one they’ve been fighting for most recently which is the Europa Conference League, it looks to be a shootout between themselves, Chelsea and Manchester United. However, Tottenheam have now lost four games on the bounce, with three games left to play, the Toon Army are now just four points behind Spurs and the Europa League spot, if they want to keep that slim chance alive, they’ve got to win here.

Brighton looked to had headed to the beach early looking at their recent results, the Seagulls were without a win in their last six Premier League games before Aston Villa headed to the south coast on Sunday afternoon, an unexpected 1-0 victory for Roberto De Zerbi’s side once again highlights the inconsistency this season, a victory here could see them move into the top half of the table.

Newcastle look to be back on top form, they’ve lost just once in their seven Premier League games and are unbeaten on home soil since January (7 games). I think Eddie Howe’s side will get the victory here as Brighton have won just once in their last games on the road, which came at relegated Sheffield United.

Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Burnley to North London on Saturday afternoon in this Premier League clash.

Tottenham haven’t had a good end to the season, after their thumping of fellow top four challengers Aston Villa at the time, it all looked set up for Spurs to go and claim that final Champions League spot in the Premier League but it’s not gone to plan. They’ve now lost their last four games in the league, granted all four games came against tough opponents but the biggest worry is the goals that Ange Postecoglou’s side are conceding in this set up, their defence has now been breached thirteen times in those four games, they’ll be looking to bounce back here.

This is literally a must win for Burnley if they are to put together a great escape and survive in the Premier League, after putting together a fairly decent run which gave the Clarets some hope of pulling off what looked like the impossible at one stage, a 4-1 hammering at home to Newcastle on Saturday has put a major dent in their survival hopes and they now need to win both of their remaining games and hope results go there way, anything other than three points here would see Vincent Kompany’s side return to the Championship.

Tottenham have beaten Burnley in ten of their eleven meetings as the home side, Burnley are yet to win on the road against Spurs, I think they’ll struggle again here and the home side should bounce back and seal the Clarets fate.

West Ham United v Luton Town

Luton Town will travel to the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon knowing a defeat to West Ham United will all but send the hatters back to the Championship.

West Ham United have confirmed that they will part ways with manager David Moyes at the end of the season with strong rumours of former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui to take over. West Ham’s season is over now, their final two games will just be played with hope of giving Moyes a good send off, he deserves it after their Europa Conference League success last season.

Luton Town know their fate could be sealed this weekend, if Nottingham Forest beat Chelsea on Saturday evening, it doesn’t matter what the Hatters do here, it would take a humongous victory over Fulham if they are to stay up via goal difference. However, if Rob Edwards’ side can get a victory here and Chelsea beat Forest, they’ll head into the final game of the season with something to play for, it’s a real case of now or never for Luton Town.

These two sides have met once in competitively since the turn of the millennium, that was actually the reverse fixture back in September, where the Hammers won 2-1 at Kenilworth Road. One thing which is usually guaranteed from this Luton Town side is entertainment, they’ve got the league high of 78% for both teams scoring in their away games, I think Luton will keep that entertaining football going here.

Napoli v Bologna

Bologna will take on Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Saturday evening in Serie A.

Napoli climbed above Fiorentina after their 1-1 draw away to Udinese on Monday, they now occupy the final European spot (Europa Conference League) with a point advantage over the Viola, albeit they’ve played a game more and the two sides meet next weekend. After winning the Scudetto last season, Napoli have disappointed in this campaign, they’ve won and drawn six of their seventeen games at home, losing the remaining five, they’ve also drawn three of their last four games on home soil.

Champions League football looked all but secured following Bologna’s impressive 3-1 victory at Roma but since then, they’ve failed to pull away for their challengers after two recent stalemate’s, which they should have won really. They’ve now got Atalanta hot on their heals as they look to have hit form just at the right time, the Veltri still have a four-point lead in fourth, albeit having played a game more. Three games left for Thiago Motta’s side, one more win could seal that precious UCL spot, If results go in their favour elsewhere.

Six of the last seven meetings between these two sides in Naples have seen both teams on the scoresheet, whilst the last two meetings have ended in draws. Napoli have drawn twelves of their thirty-five games (34%), whilst Bologna have seen nine of their seventeen games on the road end in a stalemate (53%), don’t be surprised if we get a score draw here.

Nottingham Forest v Chelsea

Chelsea will make the trip to the East Midlands to face Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest put their Premier League survival into their own hands after a 3-1 victory away to already relegated Sheffield United on Saturday, that win moves Forest three points clear of the drop and even a draw here could secure Premier League safety for another year, depending on how Luton get on in the earlier kick off. With an advantage of +11 goal difference to the Hatters, it looks like the Tricky Trees will be safe but they’d love to do it in front of their own fans after what they’ve been through this season.

Chelsea are really putting together a challenge for that final European spot, back-to-back wins have moved the Blues above Manchester United into seventh and now just two points behind Newcastle United, it’s a three team shootout and Chelsea will be looking to keep their winning streak going in their final three games of the season.

Nottingham Forest actually took all three points in the reverse fixture back in September, looking at the head-to-head stats, Chelsea haven’t beaten Forest in any of their last three Premier League meetings, there’s been two draws and that win for the Reds as mentioned, despite their winning form, Pochettino’s side haven’t won on the road in their last six games, drawing four of those, three of which ended 2-2, let’s back the same here.

Granada CF v Real Madrid

Newly crowned La Liga Champions Real Madrid will travel to the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes to face relegation threaten Granada CF on Saturday evening.

Granada have to win all of their remaining four games in La Liga and still hope that results go in their favour elsewhere if they are to avoid the drop, their stay in the Spanish top-flight could all come to an end after just one season on Saturday evening if they don’t beat Real Madrid, it’s a tough ask given they’ve won just four of their thirty-four games this season.

Real Madrid claimed their thirty-sixth La Liga title with four games still to play, it’s not surprising given the season that Los Blancos are producing, losing just once in their thirty-four league games so far, fully deserved. Despite already wrapping up the title, Carlos Ancelotti won’t let his side drop their standards and will be looking to continue their winning streak and end the season with as many points as possible.

Real Madrid have won eighteen of their nineteen games against Granada, they dominate this fixture, Los Blancos have also sored four in three of their last four meetings on the road to Granada, I think Madrid will dominate this fixture once again and confirm Granada’s relegation. 1-4.

Athletic Club v Osasuna

Athletic Club will welcome Osasuna to the Estadio San Mames on Saturday evening in La Liga.

With four games left to play, Athletic Club are currently six points behind Atletico Madrid. The side from Bilbao were hoping to end the season with Champions League football given they’ve been fighting Atleti for that fourth place for a while now, but with just one win in their last five league games and with Atleti securing four wins from their last five, the dream looks to be over. However, Athletic Club will still take pride in finishing the season with a Europa League place, which they should see out from here.

Osasuna are safe with thirty-nine points and they’ll feel it a good job really, given they are ending their season in terrible form, just one win in their last seven games, six of those have all ended in defeat. A midtable finish for Osasuna could be on the cards given they are only four points off with four games to go, but they’ll have to put together some better performances, otherwise they could find themselves dropping down the table instead.

Athletic Club have been brilliant at the Estadio San Mames this season, they’ve lost just once in the league here and have taken maximum points in eleven of their seventeen home games, they’ll fancy their chances of another victory again and look to secure Europa League football at the very least. 2-0.

Football Predictions Sunday

Atletico Madrid v Celta Vigo

Celta Vigo will take a trip to the Spanish capital on Sunday afternoon to take on Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium in this La Liga clash.

With four wins in their last five league games, Atleti have given themselves a bit of breathing room in their hopes of securing another Champions League campaign for next season. Currently fourth in La Liga, they are now six points ahead of Athletic Club with just four games left to play, their 3-1 victory recently over their top four challengers looks to be a very important victory. Only their rivals Real Madrid have a better home record than Atleti, they’ve lost just once at the Metropolitano Stadium in the league, winning fifteen of their seventeen games, impressive.

Celta secured a huge victory last weekend with a 3-2 win over Villarreal, not quite safe yet but they are definitely moving in the right direction with just four games left to play. The win on Sunday moved the Sky Blues all the way up to fifteenth on goal difference, a win here could see them secure La Liga football for the thirteenth year on the run, depending on results elsewhere.

Atleti should be confident of picking up three points here, not only do they have that brilliant home record, they also haven’t lost to Celta in their last ten meetings, with the side from Madrid winning seven of them, I think we’ll see a comfortable home win here.

Manchester United v Arsenal

Manchester United will come head-to-head with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.

Manchester United were humiliated on Monday evening after their 4-0 defeat away to Crystal Palace in the league, they might be short on numbers in terms of players but the whole performance was horrendous, you feel if the Red Devils hadn’t been in the FA Cup final, they might have parted ways with Erik ten Hag already. It looks like these players have thrown another manager under the bus, United are now 2 points off the Europa League Conference spot in the Premier League with just three games left to play. They have a chance of potentially topping Arsenal’s title challenge here, although that would result in their bitter rivals Man City winning the league instead.

It’s been a brilliant season for Arsenal, with just two games left to play in the league, it’s fair to say the Gunners simply have to win both fixtures and hope that Manchester City can drop points in the meantime. Old Trafford is a ground that Arsenal tend to struggle at, they’ve won just once there in the Premier League since 2007 which is a massive concern, although given the squad that Man United have available, they’ll fancy their chances of changing that poor record in Manchester.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last four league games, scoring thirteen goals in the process and conceding just twice. Fulham were the last London side to visit Old Trafford and picked up a 2-1 victory, seven of United’s last nine games on home soil have seen both teams hit the back of the net.

Juventus v Salernitana

Already relegated Salernitana will head to Turin to face Juventus at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday evening in Serie A.

After four draws in their last four Serie A games, this is a great chance for Juventus to get back to winning ways. The Old Lady currently occupy third place in the league and are on track to securing themselves Champions League football for next season. They could count themselves lucky that the teams around them have also had a slight dip in form, otherwise they could find themselves in a real top four battle, a victory here though could seal one of those UCL spots depending on how results go elsewhere.

Salernitana will be playing in Serie B next season, their fate has been sealed for a long time really given they’ve won just two of their thirty-five games in the league, the Garnets have a total of fifteen points so far, which would never be good enough to stay in this league and a real disappointment given they managed an impressive 42 points last season, they’ll be playing in Italy’s second flight for the first time in three years.

Juventus should get a comfortable win here, they’ve lost just once at home this season in the league whilst Salernitana have scored just eleven goals in their seventeen games on the road, conceding a league high of thirty-nine away from home, 3-0 to the Old Lady.

Atalanta v AS Roma

A massive clash will take place in Bergamo, as two sides battle it out for a UEFA Champions League position in Serie A, it’s Atalanta v AS Roma at the Gewiss Stadium.

Atalanta have really gone under the radar this season, they’ve been brilliant. The Goddess’ have already secured their place in the Coppa Italia, they are hoping to claim a spot in the Europa League final (at the time of writing) and with three wins in their last three Serie A games, they find themselves ahead of Roma in fifth on goal difference, giving them the advantage of securing Champions League football for next season with just four games left to play.

Roma have slipped into sixth place in Serie A which would only be good enough for Europa League football next season, you can’t help but feel like that 3-1 loss to Bologna might have been the most damaging game for Daniele De Rossi’s side. The Giallorossi simply cannot get beat here on Sunday evening, a defeat would likely end their top four hopes given Atalanta have still got a game in hand.

Thirteen of the last fifteen meetings between these two sides in Bergamo have seen both teams hit the back of the net, I think we’ll see an entertaining game again here given 65% of Roma’s away games in the league have produced the same. With both sides heading into this game off the back of Thursday night’s European action, I think they might end up sharing the points.

Paris Saint-Germain v Toulouse

Toulouse will travel to the Parc des Princes on Sunday evening to take on Ligue 1 champions PSG.

It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster recently for PSG and their fans, after securing their twelfth Ligue 1 title, they had hopes and dreams of achieving the one they all wanted, the UEFA Champions League. Despite being 1-0 down from the first leg, the Parisians still fancied themselves to beat Borussia Dortmund in Paris and secure book their spot in the final at Wembley. However, a vintage display from Mats Hummels caused heartbreak for Kylian Mbappe and co, as the German side send them packing.

With just two games left to play, the best Toulouse can hope for realistically is a top half finish in Ligue 1, Le Tefece are on course for their highest finish in the French top-flight since 2014/2015, one more win would give them just that. Although that win might have to wait, given Toulouse haven’t beaten PSG away from home since 2008.

Paris Saint-Germain are favourites for this game and rightly so, they’ve still got a cup final to play so they could end the season with another domestic double, they’ll be hoping to win all four of their remaining games this season.

Rennes v Lens

Roazhon Park is the venue here as two sides battling it our for a European spot in Ligue 1 come head-to-head on Sunday evening, its Rennes v Lens.

Rennes simply have to win this game if they want to keep their hopes of European football alive for next season, Les Rennais are currently eighth in Ligue 1 and four points separate them from their opponents here Lens, who occupy the final Europa Conference League spot. A home win here would move Rennes to within one point, setting us up for a brilliant final day in the French top-flight.

As already mentioned, Lens are currently sixth in Ligue 1 which could book their spot in the Europa Conference League for next season, Les Sang et Or just need to make sure they don’t get beat here, if they can manage to get at least a draw, it doesn’t matter what Lyon do, given the goal difference, Lens would still have the advantage of taking sixth place on the final day.

Rennes are an entertaining side on their home turf, 75% of their home games have produced at least three goals whilst thirteen of their sixteen games (81%) have also produced both teams to score. Lens have lost all of their last three away games in the league and they’ve actually all been by the same scoreline, with the BTTS stat above, I think another 2-1 could be likely here.

Marseille v Lorient

Lorient will travel to the Stade Velodrome with hopes of keeping their survival dreams alive as they take on Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday night.

Marseille are still in the hunt of finishing within the top six and securing European football for the French giants, despite being five points behind Lens, they’ve played a game less and if they win that game, they’ll find themselves ahead of Lyon on goal difference and just two points behind those European places with games left to play. The Phocaeans have the third best home record in Ligue 1, they’ve lost just once although they’ve drawn 38% of their games in Marseille.

Lorient could be relegated this weekend, given their goal difference of -26, the best the Merlucciidaes can hope for is finishing sixteenth which would give themselves a chance of survival via the play-offs, that of course would all depend on how Metz get on in their game, a draw there and a defeat here for Lorient would seal their fate, survival isn’t impossible with two games left to play, but it’s almost a certainty.

I don’t think Lorient will cause Marseille too many problems here, Marseille haven’t lost to Lorient in their last eleven games and they’ve taken all three points in eight of those. Lorient are also winless in their last eight games, losing seven of those, including their last three on the road.

Nantes v Lille

Nantes will take on Lille in Ligue 1 on Sunday evening at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

Nantes finished last season in sixteenth but given the format change to Ligue 1, they avoided having to play a relegation play-off, they’ll also be hoping they’ve done enough to avoid the same situation here, the Yellow House are currently four points clear of the drop zone with two games left to play, but given those remaining games are against sides in the top four, they might be relying on results to go in their favour elsewhere as they look to secure safety.

Two defeats in their last three Ligue 1 matches for Lille has invited some pressure on that precious fourth spot that they currently occupy, they have a gap of four points to Nice below although they have played a game more, so these last two matches are vital for Paulo Fonseca’s side. As long as they win both games, the Mastiffs will secure their shot at Champions League group stage qualification, at the very least.

Lille have the best home record in the league but on the road it’s a different story, they’ve won just four of their sixteen games away from home, with a draw rate of 44%. Nantes hold the worst home record in Ligue 1, they’ve taken just twelve points from a possible forty-eight, with just three wins and three draws, they’ve also lost all of their last nine home games, scoring just three times.

Football Predictions Monday

Leece v Udinese

A struggling Udinese side will travel to the Stadio Via del Mare on Monday evening to face Leece in Serie A.

Leece have put together four game unbeaten run just at the right time, having found themselves flirting with relegation, eight points from their last four games has moved the Giallorossi up to thirteenth and seven points clear of the drop with just three games left to play. They looked to have secured safety and should be playing Italian top-flight football for the third year in a row next season, although at least a draw here would make that a certainty.

Udinese have simply drawn too many games this season, 51% of their games (18) have ended in a stalemate and they’ve picked up three points just four times this season, that’s the reason why they find themselves in the bottom three and two points from safety. However, the good news for the Little Zebras is their survival is in their hands, within their remaining three games, their last two fixtures are against the two sides that are directly above them in seventeenth and sixteenth respectably, with just two points separating them all, if they can find a winner in these pivotal games they will make it thirty (30) consecutive years playing in Serie A.

Both of these sides have drawn their last two games with the same scoreline (1-1), two of their last four meetings have also finished 1-1, given Udinese are the Serie A draw specialists this season and Leece not too far behind, I think we’re in for another score draw here.

Aston Villa v Liverpool

Monday night football from the Premier League brings us an intriguing contest between two of the top four sides, it’s Aston Villa v Liverpool at Villa Park.

With just two games left to play, Aston Villa now have Champions League football for next season well and truly in their hands, they could actually have fourth spot secured before this fixture, depending on how Tottenham get on against Burnley but a win here would definitely secure that precious final UCL spot for Unai Emery’s side, who this week has been nominated for manager of the year in the Premier League.

Liverpool are just looking to give Jurgen Klopp a proper sending off, they had hoped to give the German a few trophies on his farewell tour but it looks like the Reds will have to settle for a Carabao Cup trophy and third in the league. After slipping up to both Everton and West Ham in recent weeks, Liverpool bounced back in their last outing with a 4-2 victory over Spurs, a result which looks to have helped ease any potential pressure for Monday nights opponents, Villa.

Aston Villa have a very famous victory in this fixture, their 7-2 victory in 2020 will live long in the memory of many Villans, although they haven’t beaten Liverpool in their seven attempts since that huge win, Liverpool have actually won six of those. The last seven games at Villa Park between these two have produced at least three goals, with both teams scoring in their last four.

FC Barcelona v Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad will take a trip to the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on Monday evening to face FC Barcelona in La Liga.

Barcelona enter this fixture in third place after Girona’s victory against the Spanish giants in their last outing, there’s now one point between the two sides with four games left to play. Xavi confirmed that he’s changed his mind regarding his future and will be staying on as Barcelona boss for next season, they’ve already secured Champions League football and will just be looking to finish the season as strong as they can and hopefully claim second place back from La Liga’s surprise package, Girona.

Real Sociedad put an end to their three-game winless streak in their last outing against Las Palmas, La Real occupy that final Europa League spot (6th) although after a good run of results, they’ve got Real Betis hot on their heels with just four games left to play. La Real will also be a little concerned given the fixtures they’ve got left, Barcelona (3rd), Valencia (8th), Betis (7th) and Atletico Madrid (4th), it’s a tough ask and they’ll need to put some really good performances in if they are to keep this Europa League spot.

Barcelona have been entertaining of late, five of their last six games have produced at least five goals but they’ve actually lost three of their last four games in all competitions. Despite La Real beating Barcelona at the Camp Nou last season, when Barca have been classed as they home team, they’ve won twenty-four of their last twenty give against Real Sociedad.
