Napoli Club History
Napoli have been at the forefront of discussion for people who bet on football over the last decade or so, but that hasn’t always been the case.
Founded between the World Wars in 1926, Gli Azzurri didn’t win a major trophy until their Coppa Italia triumph in 1962.
They dropped down to Serie B on multiple occasions between their founding and the mid-1960s. The club also fell from the top flight, even ending up in Serie C1 in the late-1990s and early noughties.
I Partenopei were really put on the metaphorical footballing map when they acquired Diego Maradona in 1984.
During Maradona’s time at the club, Napoli won their only European trophy (UEFA Cup in 1989), their only two topflight league titles and the Coppa Italia.
Maradona’s number 10 has since been retired by the club, and their stadium was renamed in ‘Stadio Diego Armando Maradona’ in 2020.

Once Maradona left, however, the club had a difficult period. Financial strife led to bankruptcy and relegations. Only once re-founded by Aurelio De Laurentiis in 2004 did the club begin its path to the top of Italian football.
They returned to Serie A in 2007-08, and played in the UEFA Cup just a couple of seasons later.
Led by the prolific goal scoring of Edinson Cavani, Napoli were a force to be reckoned with at the start of the 2010s.
The club competed in the Champions League in 2011-12 and won the Coppa Italia, two achievements which were repeated in 2013-14.
More high-profile talent arrived, including Gonzalo Higuain, in the following years as Napoli established themselves as an elite club once again.
They have competed in continental competition every season since 2010-11, and have finished outside the top six in Serie A just once (seventh in 2019-20).
Slovenian midfielder Marek Hamšík holds the record for the most Napoli appearances with 520. He also ranks third in the all-time scoring list, one place ahead of Maradona, but 27 goals behind Dries Mertens, who occupies top spot.

Napoli Competitions This Season
The bread and butter for Napoli is competing in Serie A betting. After finishing seventh and fifth in 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively, Napoli climbed up to third in the table in 2021-22, ensuring Champions League qualification.
Returning to the Champions League has worked out well for I Partenopei. They won their first five matches to top a challenging group, which has led to a round of 16 tie against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Their Coppa Italia campaign begins at the last 16 against Cremonese on 17th January 2023. They were knocked out at this stage last season, but reached the semi-final in 2020-21 and lifted the trophy in 2019-20.
